São Paulo, October 2019.
STATEMENT ‐ 2019/20 Brazilian Orange Crop Ratio Situation
To whom may it concern
The Technical Committee of CitrusBR would like to inform that the 2019/2020 orange crop, which are close to mid in terms of processing, has presented a sudden and remarkable trend for high ratios in orange juice.
The production of a significant volume of juice with a Ratio higher than 17 is expected, with noticeable sweet notes.
The reasons behind this trend of crop development can be credited to the uniformity of the fruit (uniform flowering) and the extreme drought and temperature conditions experienced mainly this September in the Citrus Belt of São Paulo State.
As a result of this accelerated ripening trend, Vitamin C levels in the juice are dropping rapidly, as they have a direct correlation with the acid content in the juice.
The CitrusBr associated processors are fully dedicated to the best management of this crop situation, in order to supply the market with the best quality available.
In due course, we will return with a new update on the development of orange for the citrus industry in the state of São Paulo.

São Paulo, September 2019.
STATEMENT – 09/2019 TAB/ACB Standards – Brazilian Orange Juice
To whom it may concern:

Aiming to strengthen the understanding about the possibility of incidence of Alicyclobacillus (ACB) in Orange juice, Brazilian Orange Processors represented by CitrusBR decided update this communication to the orange market and juice bottlers.
Juice bottlers are concerned that the presence of ACB in consumer packaged products, under favorable conditions could lead to flavour spoilage problems in their products, with off notes described as “Smoky bacon”, “Hammy” or even “Antiseptic”.
As per AIJN Best Practices Guideline, Alicyclobacillus is an acid tolerant thermophylic microorganism which as a spore is very heat resistant and survives the usual heat processes used in the fruit juice industry. This organism can be present and readily detectable in a wide variety of common raw materials used by packers.
The current understanding is that less than 20% of ACB strains could have the potential to spoil the final product, therefore most of the samples would naturally test negative for guayacol.
Currently, despite the improvement of practices in the industry, there is no technology yet capable of completely eliminating Juice all strains of ACB without compromising other quality aspects of the product, being unrealistic to guarantee that orange juice will be absolutely free from ACB. Thus, both raw material producers and packers of finished products, need to remain aware of this organism and act to control it in order to prevent unnecessary spoilage and loss of consumer confidence.
With that said, the CitrusBR Technical Committee, representing its members Citrosuco, Cutrale and Louis Dreyfus Company, declares:
  • Currently, it is not possible to guarantee absence of ACB and/or “guayacol forming” microorganisms in orange juice supplied from Brazil;
  • There is, however, a good basis for an effective ACB control if adopted by both raw material producers and packers of finished products, such as the control programme stated by AIJN Alicyclobacillus Best Practice Guideline;
  • As raw material manufacturers, CitrusBR members support the recommendations of the AIJN ACB Best Practice Guideline and are committed to following them, observing and implementing the necessary control points in their processes.

  1. STOCKS AUDITED ON THE 30th OF JUNE 2019:

A survey conducted through independent audits of each of CitrusBR’s associated companies and consolidated by an external audit showed that the global inventories of Brazilian orange juice, converted into FCOJ 66ºBrix Equivalent, on hands of CitrusBR members were 253,181 tons, or 26.2% below the same period last year, when the stocks were 342,967 tons.

  1. INDUSTRIAL YIELD ON FRUIT AND BRIX FOR THE 2019/20 SEASON:

In a compilation also performed individually and confidentially by independent audits by CitrusBR members, the average industrial yield on fruit for the 2019/20 crop was estimated at 274.2 boxes for the production of one ton of FCOJ equivalent 66º Brix, a worsening of 1.3% in relation to the final average yield on fruit of 270.6 boxes in the 2018/2019 crop. However, uncertainties related to possible climate changes may alter this estimate.

  1. ESTIMATED OF CARRY-OUT OF BRAZILIAN ORANGE JUICE IN THE 2019/20 SEASON:

INFORMATION TO THE MARKET
São Paulo, February 26th: A survey conducted by independent auditing firms with each of CitrusBR members, and confidentially consolidated by external independent auditing firm, analyzed the following items:
  1. TOTAL ORANGE PRODUCTION IN THE CITRUS BELT OF SÃO PAULO AND TRIÂNGULO MINEIRO ANDTOTAL ORANGE PROCESSING ON THE 2018/19 SEASON:

The data collection showed that the total orange processing in the Citrus Belt of São Paulo and Triângulo Mineiro on the 2018/19 season is estimated at 236.7 million boxes of 40.8 kilos. From this volume, 214,086,944 boxes correspond to CitrusBR members and 22,583,333 to not associated companies.

On February 11th, 2019, the Fund for Citrus Plant Protection (Fundecitrus) released the third updated forecast of the 2018/19 season, with a total of 284.88 million boxes produced in the citrus belt of São Paulo and Minas Gerais. So, when deducting the total amount of boxes produced from the total processed by CitrusBR associated not associated companies, it’s possible to estimate the domestic market of fresh fruit in around 50 million boxes of 40.8 kilos.

  1. INDUSTRIAL YIELD ON FRUIT FOR THE 2018/19 SEASON:

The final industrial yield of CitrusBR members is estimated at 269.44 boxes of 40.8 kilos for the production of one ton of FCOJ Equivalent. For companies not associated with CitrusBR, an industrial yield of 284.83 orange boxes of 40.8 kilos is estimated for the production of one ton of FCOJ equivalent.
This way, for the 2018/19 season, we can estimate an average industrial yield of 270.83 boxes of 40.8 kilos for the production of one ton of FCOJ equivalent for the 2018/19 season.

The graph below shows the average industrial yield on fruit data of companies associated with and not associated with citrusBR

  1. TOTAL ORANGE JUICE PRODUCTION IN THE CITRUS BELT OF SÃO PAULO AND TRIÂNGULO MINEIROON THE 2018/19 SEASON:

Considering the data above, we estimate that the total production of orange juice in the 2018/19 season will be 873,849 tons of FCOJ 66 Brix Equivalent. From this total volume, 794,562 tons are estimated to be produced by CitrusBR members and another 79,287 tons by not associated companies.
So, we estimate a decrease in the total orange juice production in the whole belt in the current season around 8.9% or 85 thousand tons, falling from an originally estimated total volume of 959 thousand tons in August 2018 to the current 873 thousand tons of FCOJ 66 Brix Equivalent.

This fall in orange juice production in the current season is due to the higher industrial yield on fruit than the one initially estimated and, also, due to the decrease in the volume of available fruits, according to updates published by Fundecitrus.

  1. GLOBAL ORANGE JUICE STOCKS OF CITRUSBR MEMBERS AUDITED ON DECEMBER 31ST, 2018:

A survey conducted by independent auditing firms with each of CitrusBR members, and consolidated by external independent auditing firm, found that global inventories of Brazilian orange juice, converted into Concentrate and Frozen Concentrated Orange Juice equivalent to 66° Brix (FCOJ Equivalent) on hands of its members on December 31st, 2018 amounted to 601,939 tons. This volume indicates a 14.37% decrease, or 101,042 tons compared to the 702,981 tons from the same date of the previous year.

  1. GLOBAL ORANGE JUICE STOCKS OF CITRUSBR MEMBERS PROJECTED FOR JUNE 30TH, 2019:

The same survey indicates that global inventories of FCOJ Equivalent on hands of CitrusBR members are estimated at 200,567 tons on June 30th, 2019. If confirmed, this projection will represent a decrease of 142,400 tons compared to the existing 342,967 tons on hands of CitrusBR members on June 30th, 2018.
